University Entry Essay
It has always been my wish to see the world as a better place for everyone; whether rich or poor, old or young. However, wishing alone could not bring a difference and so I made it a personal mission. I promised myself from a very young age that I will do my level best to leave a mark in the world while alive, this is a vision I still have and it’s currently my mission to see it come true. It is for this reason that I chose to write this admission essay.
The University of Alabama is well known for its outstanding reputation in nurturing talents in various fields. Drawing from the institution's mission and vision which emphasizes translation, dissemination, and provision of quality education programs in different sectors such as teaching, research, and service, I consider it to be the most ideal place for me to pursue my career and attain my ambitions.
Among the things that I like most about the university is its efforts in embracing diversity. I have spent most of my life in my birth country. While there, I was a very hardworking and determined student. Through the intense passion that I had for education, I passed with flying colors in my O-level exams and was able to secure a position in one of the country’s best universities. Since my childhood, I was a very organized child and as my parents often tell me from time to time, I always knew what I wanted in life. I chose to take a Bachelor of Science, a course that I had yearned to undertake while growing up.
Back in primary school I developed immense admiration for the field of science and some of my close friends even nicknamed me ‘The Scientist.’ This was brought about by the fact that I loved science so much and many times I could find myself teaching fellow students whenever they had difficulties. I remember back then I used to assume the role of the teacher whenever the teacher was not there. However, what perplexes me the most is the fact that I always stood in front of the class, and what I could think of teaching fellow students was nothing other than biology, chemistry, or mathematics. It later dawned on me that I was meant to pursue the field of science, it was something innate for me and if the environment influenced my decision, it is by a very small percentage.
It is this urge of finding an ideal place that will provide the best environment for learning that drew me to the University of Alabama. There are many challenges that people go through particularly when one is learning in a foreign country, I could not ignore such and that is why my desire to learn at Alabama University grew upon realizing that diversity is upheld. Personally, I strive to work amidst a diverse group of individuals, something that Alabama University wholeheartedly accommodates. Moreover, I share a common mission vision with the institution; advancing research and service to the people of the world. I feel that my background as a foreigner will be a good example that will show the world what an exceptional learning institution university of Alabama depicts.
Apart from embracing diversity and promoting quality education, the University of Alabama has turned out to be a master at establishing a niche for every student. Within the (biostatistics department) I will have the chance of following the path that will guide and lead me towards attaining scientific excellence. I love research and with the modern research resource center at the school, I believe that I will be able to mobilize my fellow students into forming a strong research team that will explore the many facets of biostatistics. Throughout this masters degree program, I am confident that if given a chance in your university, I will acquire sufficient knowledge that will help me solve some of the most critical public health challenges. The majority of the public health issues are not regional but rather global, I have confidence that through the research and data evaluation that I will be able to conduct, not only my country or the United States will be beneficiaries but other countries around the world will benefit a great deal. Research shows that developing nations are suffering the most when it comes to the burden of healthcare. The entire continent of Africa in general is going through a very hard time due to the lack of enough biostatisticians. Giving me the chance to study at the University of Alabama will not only be an advantage to me but also to my country and continent at large.
On the other hand, there is still a huge part that biostatisticians can play in society and the gaps that are still pending can bring immense change to the world. Filling this gap is my dream, a dream that I had mentioned earlier, one that will make the world a better place for every human being.
